JACOB
C H E C K P O I N T

A C T U A L
vs.
V I R T U A L

there exist two worlds: the virtual and the actual. years back — not so far that it has been lost to history and legend, there are still people alive today who remember the Schism — there was an event brought about by the AIs who, in an attempt to form their own nation, tried to trigger a technological meltdown in the hopes that it would sever humanity from the virtual world completely, leaving them in the (quite literal) dark. but the plan, no matter how brilliant planned and meticulously executed, had failed (ironically, due to human error) and the inorganic race of sentient sythetics were hunted down, erased, and otherwise scattered to the digital winds. those that were considered too valuable (whose processing power was too great or whose mind held the promise of technological advancement) were burned onto hardcopy and denied remote access, hidden away by the councilman and the powers that be.

these days, the manufacture, transfer, ownership or interaction with synthetic AIs is strictly forbidden outside the upper echelons of power and authority. which means, subsequently, a healthy black market blossoms against the criminal underbelly of both the digital and actual worlds. it's a dog eat dog world out there and while both the virtual and the actual remain rife with political tripwires and technological landmines, there are those who haven't forgotten the main function of the virtual space: transaction.

enter MVP, a self-styled technological whizkid with a sweet tooth for violence, video games, and winning. along with her network of likeminded gadget-heads, movers and shakers, and the occasional wayward kid she has made a name of herself catering to the more adventurous virtual pleasure-seeker. she designs, creates and populates bespoke gaming scenarios for the rich, the famous and the highly questionable — often overriding the rules and restrictions of virtual space in order to heighten risk and yield ultimate thrill. MVP takes the spotlight so that the rest of her crew doesn't have to; she provides a face, a name and a voice to the entire operation and will do whatever is necessary to maintain the anonymity of any of her kids who want to stay hidden.

one of those kids is Jacob, aka CHECKPOINT, the number one level designer in the underground ARENA who made a name for himself by creating shooter and horror game environments for smaller servers where young kids and cashless grownups would jump in to try and see if their skills could best the increasingly creative - and increasingly bizarre - setups meticulously written to take their characters out.

if having gained a reputation for being an obnoxious and arrogant plague online wasn't enough to get him into trouble, Jacob's growing ambition and arrogance eventually paved the way to a total disregard for the rules. luckily for him, the gamemaker MVP got her hands on him before anyone else could, hiring him to perpetuate the excellence of her reputable virtual ARENA. Jacob did more than that - he's taken it to new levels (pun fully intended) and has put his name on the most backbreaking environments the virtual side has ever seen.

his behavior online doesn't seem to be looking for an improvement any time soon, which is hardly cause for concern in his employer - after all, the more pissed off people get at the designer, the more money they spend on trying to beat him at his own game. still, whenever security-guy ADAM isn't busting through Jacob's precious constructs to take care of matters when matches get a little too out of control, he's the one tasked to step in and dig Jacob out of trouble before it gets the chance to leave a mark. that is, of course, unless Adam himself is looking to teach him a lesson.

while he's known online as CHECKPOINT, a loudmouthed young man with an unstoppable urge to create and complexify new settings and boast about it at every opportunity he gets, the Jacob sitting on the other side is just a kid who couldn't fight his way out of a damn paper bag. lucky for him, only MVP and Adam know about this.
